Beyond The Bassline Exhibition at the British Library

16th June – I attended the Black British Music exhibition and I was very please to see the thorough history of African-British culture going back 500 years. I was interested in seeing the Classical period’s African musician pioneers and also understanding the meaning of a lot of nostalgic moments that I participated as a child: Mosaics, was very popular in my primary school but only now I understand the true meaning and sub-context of what I was doing back then. I believe exhibitions like these are important as it shows the beauty and resilience of African art culture and importantly highlights the work of the many talented artists, whose work perhaps has been forgotten in the midst of western modernity. As a African-British artist and composer it is very meaningful to study the research of the artists before me.
