Tim Burton

Vincent (1982), Tim Burton short film, Music composed by Ken Hilton.

I feel interested in writing the music for films themed with unorthodox stories. Since growing up, Burton’s direction style has always resonated with me, as it ability to take children’s films that step further to a place unordinary. I also appreciate his overall scenic cinema style inspired by German expressionism and modern art. Expressionist film is the medium that produces a feeling of dreamlike unreality and psychological tension for the viewer.

‘The traits of Expressionism .. are sharply exaggerated backdrops and landscapes with high colour contrasts — typically relying heavily on the use of shadows and silhouettes to heighten a feeling of tension or dread. Sets with jagged edges and alternately rounded, tilted, or visually disjointed and discombobulated spaces, are another key element.’

Vincent clearly shows Burton’s Expressionist influences.
