Modernity, the Sonic Avant-Garde and Proto-Sound Arts

A piece that I believe showcases, true modernity and also aspects of serialism is Alice Coltrane’s reimagined compositional tale of ‘The Firebird’ originally composed and scored by Russian composer, Igor Stravinsky. Released in 1972 at a time of late modernity where the world experiencing a transformation from globalisation and the vast liberation movements. Berman, Marshall shared in ‘The Experience of Modernity’ , ‘To be modern is to find ourselves in an environment that
promises adventure, power, joy, growth’
. I agree with this and also believe Coltrane’s composition reflects the energy of modernity, by taking a song originally debuted in 1910 and adding cosmic storytelling to metamorphose its beginning message. Listening to this is very fulfilling as it enables you to dream about the limitless sense sounds, particularly orchestral arrangements can create.

"The couple [John and Alice Coltrane] and Stravinsky shared a desire for sonic manifestation of the divine."
